The Valorous and Witty Don Quixote of La Mancha
was first published in 1605, being the first European novel ever written. It is the most translated book after the Bible and it has been a best-seller since its first edition. Its author, Miguel de Cervantes, considered the Shakespeare of the Spanish language, died on the same date as his English counterpart, 23rd April, 1616.
It recounts the adventures of a XVIIth century knight errant, who toils along the plains of Spain, from “a place in the Mancha which name I do not want to remember” to Barcelona. Riding his ailing horse, Rocinante and together with his squire Sancho Panza, Don Quixote confronts the most extraordinary adventures for the sake of the weak and the honour of his lady, Dulcinea del Toboso.
The book is as varied as life and people themselves and we find in its characters a mixture of loyalty and treachery, meanness and generosity, courage and cowardice, jealousy and love, folly and wisdom.
Let your imagination and the melodies of this concert take you back to Renaissance Spain to re-enact the adventures of Don Quixote, as if you were another character in this classic masterpiece for all seasons
